Archive article. Article from 2014: since 31 December 2020 European rules (EU Regulation 2019/947) apply in Italy, and the indications on SAPR, certifications and certificates described here are no longer in force. Read which certificates are required today
May 2014, a landmark date in the history of drones in Italy. Since 30 April it has been legal to operate in our country using these fantastic devices… but under some very specific conditions.
The new regulation is based on certification. Certification is delegated to a manufacturing company and not to the weekend assembler. That is, a well-organised structure with a maintenance manager, a designer and one or more qualified pilots.
Vehicles over 25 kg are mainly industrial products. Below this threshold the process is simpler: the operator self-certifies (somewhat like ultralight aircraft) but must carry out a series of flight tests to establish the drone's hazard level and characteristics.
To avoid dangerous situations, the regulation distinguishes between critical and non-critical operations.
The former are carried out over areas where people gather and where a failure could also endanger people below; the latter are carried out in uninhabited areas or over agricultural fields, where there is no risk to property or people (in any case never above 70 metres in height and within a 200-metre radius).
Insuring the aircraft is essential. Hence the need to talk to insurance agencies to take out valid policies that allow you to operate without problems. After a round of emails, we discovered that the premium ranges from a minimum of €250 to a maximum of €1500 to insure even a single drone (a truly unrealistic figure).
AerialClick, in collaboration with EDPA, is in any case looking for pilots and operators in order to negotiate with an insurer a premium of around €100 per year.
We invite you to send us an email if you are interested in this offer.
