Drones and parachutes: keep your drone safe on the cheap!

When safety is a MUST, here is a tool that every drone should have

Reading through the ENAC regulations, a fundamental requirement is SAFETY. Safety of avionic systems, safety of mechanical systems, safety of ground link systems (better known as datalinks).

What should you do in the unfortunate event that everything goes wrong? ENAC, the Italian National Civil Aviation Authority, "requires" the use of a safety system such as a ballistic parachute, a device used until now mainly on ultralight aircraft, but which has now come back into the spotlight for these flying spiders as well.

Why a ballistic parachute?

As we said in a previous article on drone safety, not all drones are 100% safe. When operating in urban areas, a small drone weighing under 2 kg falling from a height of 70 metres can be extremely dangerous.

Hence the aforementioned obligation to use ballistic parachutes capable of:

  • Slowing the drone's descent to the ground
  • Saving the drone from certain destruction
  • Saving a person on the ground from an impact with the drone
  • Preventing the drone from leaving the V70 cylinder (200 m radius and 70 m height)
  • Meeting ENAC requirements

What is available on the market?

There are several solutions on the market. Some are simpler to install, others more imaginative, others simple but unattractive. Here they are:

  • OPALE parachutes: compact, elegant and easy to mount, they are a very practical and quick solution for installing a parachute on a drone. Cons? Deployment is slow (there is no explosive system) and the system is not very effective if the drone is only a few metres above the ground.
  • FruitChuse parachutes: CO2-powered for extremely fast deployment, they are very effective, easy to mount and compact. The downside? The truly frightening cost of over $500 for a parachute for aircraft weighing less than 1.8 kg.
  • MARS parachutes: currently the best solution to save your drone from an impact with the ground. Fitted with a spring for fast opening, they are easy to attach to the airframe and can be triggered remotely. The downside? They are not very good-looking and require a dedicated installation.

By adopting one of these parachutes, the risk of damage to your drone is significantly reduced!
