DJI Neo vs. DJI Flip: which is the best drone for beginners?
DJI has introduced, just a few months apart, two drones designed specifically to meet the needs of beginner pilots: the DJI Neo and the DJI Flip .
· 4 min read
The Neo series was created to offer a simple, intuitive flight experience designed for those who want to start recording quality content without complications, expanding the creative possibilities of those who do not yet hold a drone licence. With Neo 2, DJI has revised several key aspects of the previous model, bringing improvements that make the new drone safer, more powerful and more versatile.
In this article we analyse the real differences between DJI Neo and DJI Neo 2, to help you understand which of the two is best suited to your needs.§
Obstacle detection system: a generational leap
One of the most evident changes introduced by Neo 2 concerns the vision system. The previous model was limited to essential detection, while Neo 2 integrates a much more advanced combination of sensors: omnidirectional monocular vision, front LiDAR and downward infrared sensors.
This upgrade allows the drone to recognise obstacles during forward and lateral flights, ensuring superior protection especially for those with little experience. The result is a more stable and controlled flight in any context, from enclosed spaces to the most complex environments.
Stability and hovering: Neo 2 dominates difficult environments
Another significant improvement concerns the ability to hold position. Neo already offered satisfactory hovering, but Neo 2 introduces a more precise algorithm that allows the drone to remain stable even in complex areas such as:
indoor environments
areas close to walls
reflective surfaces such as water
snow-covered terrain
For those who use the drone while travelling or in unpredictable situations, this difference can be decisive.
Image quality: Neo 2 levels up
On the filming front, Neo 2 marks a clear improvement thanks to its 12 MP CMOS sensor with f/2.2 aperture. The difference lies less in the resolution than in the overall rendering: the new image processor reduces noise, optimises colours and handles variable lighting conditions better.
Neo 2 can record 4K/60fps video and slow motion up to 4K/100fps, as well as stabilised 2.7K vertical video. For a drone of this size, it is a particularly welcome upgrade.
New controls and smart modes
DJI has added to Neo 2 a physical button dedicated to take-off and a button to change modes quickly, making use even more immediate.
But the real difference is in the smart features:
enhanced gesture control
improved return to palm
more accurate SelfieShot
Dolly Zoom, MasterShot and other automatic modes
next-generation ActiveTrack, more stable and suited to sports such as running and cycling
Compared to the first-generation Neo, the new model offers a wider range of creative features, which also simplify filming for less experienced users.
Internal storage: a concrete advantage
One of the most useful new features introduced by Neo 2 is the built-in 49 GB storage. This allows you to record for long periods without needing to insert a microSD card, a detail that can make a difference when travelling or when you want to stay light.
Shared features
Despite the differences, both models share some common points, such as:
compatibility with the DJI OM Multifunctional Module
built-in tripod
built-in Extension Rod
up to 10 hours of battery life (stabilizer mode)
ActiveTrack 7.0
AI Editor
built-in smartphone charging
The basic user experience therefore remains similar, especially for those who also use the drone as a stabilization tool.
DJI Neo or DJI Neo 2? Our conclusion
DJI Neo is still an excellent product for anyone looking for a simple, affordable device to create content on the go. DJI Neo 2, however, represents a clear step forward in terms of safety, video quality and smart features.
The new detection system, more stable hovering, the ability to record in 4K/60fps and the 49 GB of internal storage make it a more modern and reliable model.
