Open Day “Drones for Security”: what you will see, what you can do, why take part

On June 14, 2025, at the Angelo D’Arrigo airfield in Calatabiano, the 1st Open Day entirely dedicated to the professional use of drones by law enforcement will take place. It will not be just any demonstration event, but a concrete opportunity to explore in depth, get hands-on and engage with industry experts on a topic that is more relevant than ever: the integration of drones into security operations.

Attendees will be able to watch technical presentations, flight demonstrations and hands-on trial sessions, with an operational focus designed for those who work in the field every day.

A programme tailor-made for law enforcement

The day will begin with an introduction on the growing role of drones in supporting security activities. Next, the various types of UAS currently available will be presented, from multirotor drones to fixed-wing vertical take-off (VTOL) models. The main operational characteristics of each configuration will be discussed, highlighting how the different architectures suit different contexts and missions, from short-range operations in complex environments to monitoring larger areas. The goal is to give participants a clear and concrete view of which type of drone can offer the best support based on specific operational needs.

Ample space will be devoted to professional training, with a practical guide to the training paths available today. It will be clarified which route to follow depending on the operational context, the type of mission to be carried out and the regulations in force, distinguishing between Open category courses (A1, A2, A3) and Specific category courses (STS, SORA).

In the afternoon, the focus will shift to real-world deployment scenarios: how can drones improve emergency management, environmental monitoring, and surveillance of large or hard-to-reach areas? The answers will come from practical demonstrations with professional drones, including the DJI Mavic 3T, the Aerialclick AC50 and the Swallow VTOL drone, designed to deliver high performance in a variety of operational contexts.

Those who wish to can also take part in the "Try it yourself" session, supported by expert instructors: a concrete opportunity to become familiar with the equipment, understand flight logic and try out the operational features of the drones.

The Open Day is not designed merely to present products or courses, but to offer an integrated, practice-oriented view of the use of drones in public security.
