Archive article. Article from 2015: since 31 December 2020 European rules (Regulation EU 2019/947) apply in Italy, and the information on SAPR (UAS), certifications and certificates described here is no longer in force. Read which certificates are required today
The market is like society: it seems to be governed by rigid, granite-like rules, but in reality it is constantly changing, especially in recent years thanks to the internet and the speed of technological developments.
It will no longer be enough (or at least less and less so) for one of a company's employees to simply know how to (and be legally allowed to) fly a drone in order to carry out certain tasks that have become indispensable in some sectors.
Indeed, both because of the technical and legal requirements for SAPR operators and because of the continuous evolution of the drone world, aerial filming will become a true field of professional specialization, in short a real full-time job, for which some companies will have to include a "SAPR" section in their staff.
For this reason, within a few years (10 at most) some types of companies will turn to professional drone pilots (self-employed with a VAT number as SAPR operators) to carry out certain key operations in their respective fields more quickly, more precisely and more cheaply.
Let's see which companies will need drone pilots:
The construction sector (buildings, roads, etc.) already knows something about the speed and precision with which a drone flight performed by an ENAC-certified pilot can help in mapping a construction site.
From calculating excavation volumes and cross-section profiles, to earth fill and topographic surveys, the already advanced tools linked to drone technology will undergo further upgrades and refinements in the coming years that will require the expertise of dedicated specialists.

Everything related to the promotion and sale of real estate is increasingly tied to the world of aerial filming and photography.
Indeed, aerial visual storytelling is increasingly popular both in industry magazines (print and online) and among medium and large construction companies promoting and selling their land and properties to ever more expert and demanding clients.
Moreover, today's real estate sales made online (or almost entirely through remote contacts) to foreign buyers (especially Japanese, Chinese, American and Russian) require overall promotional images that are as detailed about the product's specifications as they are emotionally engaging.
If the world of work is going through a sort of "agricultural revolution", with many young people specializing in farming, driven by a growing interest in quality food and wine, it is also true that the agricultural sector itself is going through a genuine "aerial revolution". Indeed, drones used for agricultural mapping and smart, targeted fertilization have been a topic constantly at the center of every conference on the agricultural sector over the last five years.
To map a field and study its needs and specific features, knowing how to fly is not enough: you need to know 3D mapping software and how to integrate it with dedicated agriculture-specific programs, which cover smart irrigation, surveys of the health of foliage and soil, and even methods to prevent the diseases a given field is most vulnerable to.
We had already talked about this in the article The 3 rules for perfect agricultural mapping
From the need for viral videos to promote any type of brand or event, to the tendency of the advertising and creative world to make use of every technological advancement, the reasons why creative studios will need a specialist in aerial filming are countless.
Among these, the specialization of a certified drone pilot in the legislation governing aerial filming is extremely important! A good photographer is not enough, let alone a good camera operator. You need an expert drone pilot who knows the risks of failing to comply with certain flight rules, who can recognize the potential of every type of shot, and who can support the director during the various stages of editing.
While on one hand police and public security forces in several countries are equipping themselves with quadcopters and hexacopters to monitor border drug trafficking, illegal landings, prostitution routes and so on, private security firms will also have drones in their equipment. But they won't be able to do anything with them unless they have recognition from civil aviation authorities and unless they are supported by certified SAPR operators.
These are just five examples closest to the everyday experiences of all of us, but in reality the fields of application in which a drone pilot is indispensable are many and grow year after year, going hand in hand with regulatory changes, which are currently the most complex thing that only a Professional Drone Pilot would be able to keep up with.
