3 practical applications to indulge serial wanderers.
Travelling on a drone isn't possible yet, we know, don't worry.
Yet there are possible (and already feasible, if not already in use) civil applications of small Remotely Piloted Aircraft that concern the world of compulsive travellers.
Let's look at a few together:
The web is full of them by now. Panoramic videos showing beauty seen from above. Of course all accompanied by music, which accounts for over 40% of the final effect, and post-production editing that should not be underestimated. Great, beautiful, we like them, but now we can go further, right?
Drones offer a dynamic potential that is absolutely inaccessible to any other filming tool, at least at these costs (alternatively you can use a beautiful helicopter with a pilot and co-pilot). And where there is dynamism there are people moving. Following an athlete, for example (skiers, daredevils free climbing or doing the swan dive), is a way to best convey the adrenaline of certain activities promoted locally. Because, strange but true, a traveller doesn't live on farm stays alone.
Robin Rowland, CEO of the Japanese restaurant chain To! Sushi, built his popularity on technological oddities: in his London restaurant he tested a system in which the customer orders from a tablet and the dishes arrive on mini quadcopters. Also in London, the Domino's pizzerias use Dominocopters, remote-controlled helicopters that manage to deliver pizzas very quickly, without the risk of them arriving cold because of traffic. Something similar happens in San Francisco, where a well-known chain has burritos delivered (thrown) to (onto??) customers. Curious people travelling to London are allowed to try. And then go for a drink (to forget the scene of a drone serving a burrito) in a place where your curiosity can be satisfied with a chat with a waiter without propellers.
If you have a physical or motor disability, the need to study destinations carefully and in advance is not just an extra or a luxury. It becomes a real necessity.
Fewer and fewer people, despite physical impairments, give up even the most adventurous trips. In the coming years, any agency website that promotes and organises excursions, or any tourist board that calls itself a promoter of accessible tourism, will not be able to avoid producing or commissioning ad hoc videos that present the area in all its features and that can visually and in detail demonstrate the levels of accessibility for every type of disability, motor or sensory.
Not only that: there are places that people with motor disabilities cannot access. Think of caves, cavities in cliffs, man-made tunnels of historical and cultural value, or even natural tunnels. During an excursion or a local trip, an organisation that arranges accessible travel could soon equip itself with a drone that connects through an app to devices provided to each member of the tour. And the journey can continue for everyone, albeit in a perceptually different way, even at the entrance of a natural cave.
Because a journey is made not only of roads, but also of people.
